The Cochimi Indians lived in the area for generations
before the first known explorers set foot here in
1534. It has been noted by Spanish archeologists that
the Cochimi Indians date back 14,000 years. Archeology
is still mainly untouched, with much more to be discovered.
The Cochimi lived by fishing, fruit and seed gathering.
The Cochimi myths of the area contend they descended
from giants and that they were the creators of the
old paintings and petroglyphs.
Also to be found is a magical healing clay which was
religiously used by the Cochimi Indians. The clay
secrets passed down to the missionaries are still
used today by many of the village people.
La Trinidad, one of the most fun-filled guided tours,
shows the Indian paintings of the past. To reach the
caves where the paintings are you will enjoy a short
wade through water and be thrilled at the magnificent
beauty of the area. You'll be awestruck as you go
through the canyon with its sheer stone walls that
hold many an untold story.
The Mission Santa Rosalía de Mulegé
was started in 1668 and completed in 1705 by Father
Juan Basuldua. The dam below the Mission was also
built by the missionaries and Indians for the irrigation
of crops and other projects. From the lookout behind
the mission you can see tropical date palms, the Sea
of Cortez and much of the area.
The largest pearl in the world to this day, the size
of a pigeon egg, was found in this area. The pearl
is now to be found in a Royal European Crown.
